今年も受験シーズンが到来した。今年は１８日（土）にセンター試験が行われ、志望校目指して静かな戦いが幕を開ける。また、都市部では私立の小学校や中学校を受験する生徒も存在し、２０台未満の節目に当たる歳で、それぞれの挑戦が始まる。
私立の小中学校に関しては受かってからの方が重要でもあるし、また、高校に関しても「自宅から近い」「同中が多い」など、割と穏やかな志望動機で受験を迎える学生もいる。「受験に重きを置いていない受験生」も多いのではないだろうか。
しかし、茫漠とした考えで通用するのも高校受験まで。大学受験となれば話は別だ。将来の夢をかなえるためであったり、満足のいくキャンパスライフを送るためであったり、より偏差値の高い大学目指してそれぞれが必死になって勉強する。私立か公立か、文系か理系か。選び方によっては人生が１８０度変動する。若者にとっては、少し非情な試練かもしれない。
そんな受験生を応援する「合格にご利益のあるお寺」なるものが日本には古くから多数存在していて、なかでもユニークなのが「智恵（ちえ）の文殊さん」として知られる堺市西区の家原寺（えばらじ）。１０年以上前から「頭をなでると合格できる」と評判を呼ぶ「ミーちゃん」という猫がいて、猫目当てに多くの受験生でにぎわう。なかには「ミーちゃんのおかげで合格できた」とお礼に参る学生もいるといい、本堂は合格祈願の白いハンカチでびっしりと覆われているそうだ。
合格できるかどうかは本人の努力しだい。そうはわかっていても、神仏どころか「猫頼み」に走ってしまうという心境は、少なからず共感できる。「なんでもいいから合格したい！」という想いは、受験生には必ずあるはず。そして猫に頼むほどの強い想いを抱いているからこそ合格できる力が身につくのではないだろうか。
努力した分だけ充実した学生生活が送れるはず。すべての受験生にとって悔いのない挑戦になるよう、静かに祈っていようと思う。
